People's National Congress (PNC), on Sunday, appointed Geela Ali as the party's Secretary General.

Geela previously served as the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Health, and the Additional Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. She also contested for PNC's council; however, she failed in her bid to be elected.

The appointment was finalised during a conference meeting in which the mandate and powers of PNC's four recently elected Vice Presidents were also decided.

Former Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed was placed in charge of finance and administration, Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau is tasked with the party's youth activities, former Secretary General of PPM Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) is to manage external affairs, and former Parliamentary Group Leader of PPM and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan will handle media and public relations as well as membership.

The four Vice Presidents were elected to their positions after the party charter was amended during Friday's PNC Congress. Previously, it was stipulated that PNC could only have two Vice Presidents.

During the Congress, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem also secured the post of the party's president without a vote as he was the only candidate for the position.

In addition, former Minister of Defence Adam Shareef and parliament-elect for Maduvvari constituency was elected as PNC’s parliamentary group leader on Friday.
