Maldives tightened its border security in relation to the terrorist bombings that occurred in multiple locations in Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Immigration Controller Mohamed Ahmed Hussain stated that Maldives Immigration along with relevant authorities further enhanced security after the attacks, reported local media Mihaaru. Immigration is currently increasing screenings as well.

“Staying on alert is important after such dangerous attacks in a neighbouring country. Accordingly, we have enhanced security measures”, he said.

On Monday, he met with Border Control Officers to discuss security measures.

The death toll from the bomb blasts in heavily civilian crowded locations in Sri Lanka currently numbers over 300, while 500 people were injured. However, the death toll is expected to rise.

Following the bombings, Sri Lank declared a State of Emergency (SOE) which was implemented late Monday.

Moreover, 24 people were arrested in relation to the attacks.

Government spokesperson Rajita Senaratne alleged that Sri Lankan extremist group National Thowheed Jamath was responsible for orchestrating the attacks.
