The president's spokesperson Ibrahim Hood revealed on Sunday that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has reduced the sentences of 201 detainees currently serving jail time.

Assuring that these detainees will not pose a threat to society, Hood stated that priority was given to inmates seeking justice, who were penalized by the judicial process.

"There are certain people trapped within the system. Priority was given to those who were disadvantaged due to the implementation of the new Penal Code".

Moreover, Hood revealed that consideration was given to their health, conduct in jail and other special circumstances.

Due to the reduction of sentences, some inmates have gone free while others have been shifted to house arrest. A large portion of their sentences were pardoned for the remaining detainees.

According to Hood, those granted reduced sentences include those jailed for the usage of dimorphine, cannabis and alcohol as well as inmates serving jail-time for theft.

Additionally, Hood revealed that although an inmate was granted freedom, Maldives Police Service can inspect their home and belongings without a court order for two years, had they been serving a sentence for substance abuse.
