Fazeel and accomplices granted conditional release

Gan Magistrate Court, Laamu Atoll, on Wednesday, provided conditional releases for three men arrested in a dinghy boarded by younger sister of missing Aminath Shima Nafiz.

The remand period of the three men arrested on March 11 was extended by 15 days on two occasions.

Police spokesperson stated that the court decided to release them when they were summoned to extend their detention again. The conditions on which they were released were not revealed.

Shima Nafiz, 19, was travelling from Kadhdhoo, Laamu Atoll, to Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alif Atoll with Ibrahim Fazeel on February 22, when the small boat capsized in the Gaadhoo channel.

Shima was lost, while Fazeel was able to swim to nearby resort, Six Senses Laamu.

According to Fazeel, before he swimming towards the resort he handed his longtime friend Shima a phone and an empty petrol tank to hold on to. He claims that he was attempting to seek help.

On March 10, Police halted a dinghy which was boarded by the the16-year-old younger sister of Shima. Police revealed that the dinghy was travelling from Maamendhoo and was stopped near Six Senses Laamu.

Despite various counts of speculation, Maldives Police Service is yet to reveal any information regarding the matter.
