Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday decided to investigate an issue regarding a ballot box of Kendhoo constituency in the April 6 Parliamentary Elections.
Tentative results show that the Kendhoo seat was defended by its current MP Ali Hussain of Jumhooree Party (JP). He received 988 votes while his rival, Ahmed Latheef of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), received 829 votes in his favour.
Latheef filed the issue at EC, seeking to annul the results of one of the ballot boxes and arrange for a re-vote.
The complaint claims that 377 people were announced to have cast their votes in the ballot box by 1400 hours on voting day, but the amount clashed with the actual number of people in queue.
It was also claimed that polling continued at the ballot box despite the problem being brought to the attention of the official in charge.
Latheef's complaint further claimed that the ballot box sheet, voters list, indelible ink mark list, and queue number list did not match each other. It also alleged that an election official cast their ballot after polling closed at 1800 hours.
EC member Ahmed Akram told local media Mihaaru that a team from the Complaints Bureau will head to Kendhoo, Baa Atoll, to probe the issue.
He added that EC will resolve the case based on the investigation.
Meanwhile, the commission has decided to recount the votes of Maavah constituency and Maamigili constituency, following complaints. EC has also decided to forgo probing issues regarding some other constituencies after determining that there was nothing to warrant a change in results.
