Gaafu Alifu atoll Magistrate Court has sentenced a father to one month in jail for failing to pay child support, ordered his bank account frozen, and mandated full payment of the owed amount within three months.

Magistrate Aishath Shihab of Gaafu Alifu atoll Villingili Magistrate's Court issued the ruling, responding to a case filed by the child’s mother who sought child support payments to be made, even if it required the father’s imprisonment.

The unpaid child support amounted to MVR 153,504, with the father having only made payment once during the initial month after the court ordered monthly payments of MVR 1,500.

The court also seized the father’s passport and directed that the MVR 950 in his bank account be transferred to the mother. If the father pays the outstanding amount within three months, the punitive actions will be lifted.

Non-payment of child support following divorce remains a pressing issue, with many cases filed in courts seeking a resolution to this problem. The measures applied in this case, including account freezing and passport seizure are stipulated under the Family Code for enforcing child support payments.
