Mathikilhi Society has said that 60 percent of the grass field at the Mathikilhi Econ Garden in Meedhoo, Addu has been burned in the fire that broke out yesterday afternoon at the wetlands in the garden.
Reports of the fire was received at 11:45 am yesterday. With continued efforts, authorities managed to entirely put the fire out by around 10:30 pm last night.
Mathikilhi Society said that although the grass field can be recovered in about six months, it will take years to recover the Kandofishi High Vegetation Line.
They said that many of the trees at the area, including screwpine and sea hibiscus, are decades old, with the Kandofishi Vegetation Line being a sanctuary for grey heron and the black crowned night heron. It is also a transit point for migratory birds, they said.
The society said that yesterday's fire caused the largest loss to the land within the past fifteen years.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as of yet.
