The Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) has issued a white alert for the northern atolls of the Maldives.
The alert, which covers the area from Haa Alifu Atoll to Lhaviyani Atoll, forecasts that strong winds between 19 to 24 miles per hour with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour are to be expected in this region, and that seas will be generally rough.
The MET issued the alert from 4 p.m. today till 8p.m. tonight.
The MET forecasts that the country will experience scattered rain with a few heavy showers and thunderstorms today and tonight. The weather forecast highlight that strong southwest to westerly winds at 5 to 15 miles per hour are expected across the country within the next 12 hours, and that winds may gust to 35 miles per hour during showers. The MET office warns that seas may become slightly rough during showers.
The capital city of Malé experienced heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas this morning, and further rain and strong winds are expected tonight and tomorrow across the northern islands.
People are advised to exercise extra caution and follow safety measures while traveling at sea during this period.
