Under the 'Magey Saafu Raajje' [My Clean Maldives] program run by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, establishment and upgrading of waste and utilities management centres in 75 islands have been contracted to three companies.

These projects in 75 islands include new initiatives, as well as continuation of a number of stalled projects,

In a ceremony held at Dharubaaruge to sign agreements for this program, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim emphasized the importance of managing waste in islands across Maldives. He noted that this would also contribute towards strengthening local tourism in those islands.

Last week, the ministry handed over to WAMCO the establishment of waste and utility management centres in 34 islands.

In yesterday's ceremony, these projects across 75 islands were handed over to MTCC, Fenaka and RDC.

MTCC was contracted to upgrade projects in 26 islands, while Fenaka is to upgrade ongoing projects in 22 islands and establish the services anew in three islands.

RDC, meanwhile, is to upgrade services in 20 islands, and newly establish services in four.

The ministry said that under this program, in addition to 109 islands where waste management infrastructure is being built, waste management has been established to a standard accepted by the ministry in the remaining islands as well.

The work is estimated to reach completion by the end of the year in all islands.
