High Court has issued an order to temporarily stay a Civil Court ruling, which had directed the police to hand over anti vaccination books and documents seized from an individual, Shifan Ahmed.

Shifan had brought these materials, containing anti-vaccination stories for children, into the Maldives via post, prompting the police to confiscate them.

Shifan filed a case in the Civil Court to recover the seized items, and the court ruled in his favor, stating that the police had not proven that the seizure was conducted lawfully. The court then ordered the police to return the books and documents to Shifan.

However, the prosecution appealed to the High Court, arguing that releasing the materials would hinder the state's ability to fulfill its obligations under the Child Rights Protection Act, which aims to safeguard public health and the public interest.

A stay on the Civil Court's order was requested to prevent harm to the public.

High Court agreed with the prosecution, issuing an order to postpone the execution of the Civil Court’s ruling until the appeal is decided, citing concerns that releasing the materials before the appeal could undermine the purpose of High Court’s judgment.
