In response to questions raised by members of the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee today, Fazul said that two elevators will be installed in each tower of the Hiyaa flats, one which can accommodate stretchers and one with a capacity of 14 people.
Installation of 32 new elevators in the Hiyaa flats will cost USD 18 million (MVR 278 million), Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed said today.
In response to questions raised by members of the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee today, Fazul said that two elevators will be installed in each tower of the Hiyaa flats, and the installation project is currently underway.
While this year’s budget initially allocated MVR 200 million for the project, the budget was later reduced to MVR 100 million.
The elevator installation project was awarded last February to China’s Shenyang Yuanda Intellectual Industry Group Co., Ltd. One of the new elevators to be installed in each Hiyaa tower will be large enough to accommodate stretchers, while the other will have a capacity of approximately 14 people.
Out of the 16 towers in the 25-storey Hiyaa flats, some have four elevators, while others have three.
However, residents have complained about difficulties in using the elevators. Currently, approximately 50,000 people live in the Hiyaa towers.
