High Court has today decided that it will hold open hearings in the appeal case submitted by Mohamed Ameen regarding his 27 year prison sentence.
Ameen, of KariyyaVilla, Gn. Fuvahmulah, was charged with leading Islamic State (IS) activities in the Maldives, and sending Maldivians to fight in foreign civil wars.
Criminal Court convicted him of the charges and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. In the initial case, Criminal Court held the hearings closed.
In today's hearing of the appeal case at High Court, Ameen's lawyer Hamza Latheef said that holding open hearings in the case may lead to the disclosure of some intelligence information related to national security. Hamza said that holding open hearings also leads to conjecture and rumours on social media and media outlets that may infringe upon Ameen's rights.
The State also did not object against holding closed hearings, but the bench of judges decided to hold open hearings.
The case is being heard by Judge Mohamed Faisal, Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed and Judge Mohamed Shaneez, with Judge Faisal presiding.
Ameen was earlier accused in the bombing at Sultan Park in 2007. He was repatriated to Maldives in 2012 while he was abroad, but was later acquitted.
Ameen's name also appears on the list of terrorists published by the US earlier.
