Supreme Court has today accepted a case submitted appealing to rule that ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for North Hithadhoo Mohamed Sinan has lost his parliamentary seat.

The case cites that MP Sinan has failed to pay back a loan he has taken from Maldives Islamic Bank as per a court ruling, and hence has lost his seat. The case was submitted by an individual named Ghalib Saleem.

Supreme Court's Registrar decided to accept the case as it is in accordance with the court's regulations.

As per the Constitution, if an MP fails to pay back a proven debt in accordance with a court ruling, the MP will lose their seat.

This is the first instance where the Supreme Court is hearing a case on the loss of a seat of a member of the current 20th Parliament.

While the court has accepted this case, three Supreme Court judges were recently suspended. Of these, Judge HusnuSuood has handed in his resignation last week, while Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir and Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir remain on suspension.
