Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said that it is monitoring the spread of respiratory diseases in China, particularly as the number of travelers returning to Maldives, including those arriving from Umrah pilgrimages, increases.

Responding to questions on the Health Ministry's media group, the ministry's media official said that the situation in China, including the spread of influenza, is under observation. The official added that respiratory illnesses are expected to rise during this period due to increased travel.

As a precaution, HPA has advised wearing masks in public spaces and avoiding contact with elderly and children, if experiencing symptoms like fever or cough. Those with severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or extreme fatigue, are asked to seek medical attention.

Seeking medical attention early is recommended for anyone suspected of contracting a respiratory infection, even if their condition appears mild.

World Health Organization (WHO) has quoted China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which reported an increase in respiratory illnesses since mid November. While the most common illness is influenza, other viruses include RSV, rhinovirus, adenovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and human metapneumovirus.

China has not declared an emergency over the situation, stating that respiratory diseases typically rise during the winter season.

Despite the current spike in cases, the number and severity are reportedly lower than last year.
