The Government has decided to charge a fee of MVR 10,000 if missing person reports submitted regarding expatriates who have fled or gone missing are withdrawn.

An announcement released by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology today states that the policies formed under the regulations on expatriates working in Maldives will be implemented effective Sunday. The regulations have been in effect since May last year.

As per the announcement, a fee will be charged in accordance with the guidelines on actions to be taken if an expatriate employee flees or goes missing. The fees are;

- A service fee of MVR 1000 for each missing report request

- If an employer working with a valid work permit flees or goes missing through the negligence of the employer, a fine of MVR 2000

- If a missing person report regarding an expatriate going missing of fleeing is withdrawn, a fee of MVR 10,000

The Ministry said that from Sunday onwards, such missing person reports can be withdrawn through the XPat system.

For those wishing to withdraw presently submitted missing person reports, a window of 30 days from Sunday will be provided, within which the MVR 10,000 fee will not be levied. If reports are withdrawn after this period, then the fees will apply.

Any missing person reports submitted after Sunday will only be given a non-chargeable period of seven days within which the report can be withdrawn. After that, the MVR 10,000 fee will apply.

Homeland Security Ministry said that information related to missing person reports will be available via the XPat system from Sunday onwards. For further information, the ministry can be contacted via dialing 1500.
