Kulhudhuhfushi has temporarily banned the use of canoes in their mangroves so as not to disturb the migratory flamingoes roosting there at this time.
Since 2022, flamingoes have been visiting Maldives during migration around this time each year. This year, their first destination is the mangroves in Kulhudhuhfushi, where they still remain.
In an announcement, the Kulhudhuhfushi council said that they are receiving complaints that some in canoes are venturing too close to the flamingoes and acting in ways that would disturb the birds.
Due to this, the council has decided to temporarily ban the use of canoes in the mangroves.
The council urged the public to report any incidences of canoeing or otherwise causing disturbance to the birds.
Each day, many residents of the island visit the mangroves to shoot photos of the visiting birds, which are widely being shared on social media.
