A letter sent to the employees stated they were being suspended with pay for 14 days and must cooperate with the company if requested to provide information regarding the case.
Three employees of Fenaka Corporation’s Miladhoo branch in Noonu atoll have been suspended for 14 days.
The decision follows the victory of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, Aminath Azuma, over the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate in the Miladhoo Women’s Development Committee by-election held on Saturday.
In a statement last night, MDP condemned the suspension of its members working at the Miladhoo Fenaka branch, calling it politically motivated.
According to MDP, the employees were informed that an investigation had been launched against them, leading to their suspension. However, no reasons were provided for the decision.
A letter sent to the employees stated they were being suspended with pay for 14 days and must cooperate with the company if requested to provide information regarding the case.
The nature of the investigation remains unclear.
MDP expressed concern, stating that political affiliations should not be grounds for job suspensions. The party highlighted that the Constitution guarantees the right to vote and contest in elections, and described the action as an attempt to intimidate opposition supporters.
MDP further alleged that the government had attempted to influence the by-election but was defeated by a significant majority.
The party also accused state agencies and companies of using intimidation tactics to suppress opposition voices.
