The term of Ibrahim Shaheeb, Maldives' High Commissioner to India, has expired, and the appointment of a new High Commissioner has been forwarded to the Parliament for approval.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Aishath Azeema, currently serving as the Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to fill this position. Azeema previously served as the Maldives Ambassador to China from 2019 to 2023.

Shaheeb, appointed as High Commissioner to India in November 2022 during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, has completed his term.

Prior to his appointment in India, Shaheeb was the Maldives Ambassador to Singapore for one year. His diplomatic career, which began in 1991, has seen him serve in various capacities, including as Chief of Protocol in 2018.

The appointment of a new High Commissioner comes at a time when bilateral relations between the Maldives and India have been recently improved.

During President Muizzu’s state visit to India last week, several agreements were signed, including India's provision of a USD 400 million currency swap facility of INR 30 billion to help ease the Maldives' foreign exchange burden.
