Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that criminal charges should be pressed against Male' City Council (MCC) for cutting down trees in various areas of capital Male' City.

Nasheed made this post on X in response to a video showing trees being cut down in Vilimale'. In his post, Nasheed said that MCC cutting down trees in this manner is against the law, and so criminal charges should be pressed against them.

Male' Mayor Adam Azim, however, said that the trees that were cut down in Vilimale' had to be taken down due to buses hitting trees and sustaining damage after a recent change to the bus route.

Azim said that new trees would be planted next week.

Nasheed has previously filed a case in court to halt the earlier felling of trees on Ameenee Magu during the construction of the road. However, he failed to win the case against Road Development Corporation at the time.

At the time, Ameenee Magu was one of the greenest streets in Male', with some of the trees having been there for over 20 years.
