In the drug trafficking cases from Fuvahmulah, the Prosecutor General's case has rejected the case forwarded by Police for prosecution, and advised the Police to first conclude the investigation.

Under the 'Operation Veshi Rakkal' commenced on January 14 in Fuvahmulah, 58 persons were arrested, and 75 cases were investigated against them. Of these, 65 cases were sent to the PG Office for prosecution.

A PG Office Media Official said that the cases have been forwarded to the duty prosecutor, however they have not been accepted yet.

"We have advised Police to complete specific parts of the investigation first," they said.

Two persons believed to be amongst those leading the network were arrested on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering last month. These are Ahmed Niushad, 34, of Karanka Villa, Dhoodigan, Fuvahmulah, and Hassan Azim, 29, of Zamaanee Villa, Dhoodigan, Fuvahmulah.

Police said then that over the past five years, upwards of MVR 21 million had been circulated through Niushad's bank account. Further, over MVR 7 million was rolled through Azim's bank account in a two year period.

Some residents from Fuvahmulah allege that the two have been involved in drug trafficking for years, basing their suspicions on the two's higher than normal living standards without working any known jobs.
