Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has stated that there is new information discovered regarding the attack of former President and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, 2021.

Ghassan revealed this while answering questions posed by MPs in yesterday's parliamentary sitting.

Central Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy asked Ghassan if the incumbent government is able to provide assurance that it will investigate the attack on Nasheed to its fullest and deliver justice accordingly.

Ghassan responded that the matter would be investigated thoroughly, revealing that new information has already come to light in the investigations conducted so far.

"There are some observations made so far on this matter that the Defence Ministry can actually share with this parliament. However, we can only release that information when you do the required work to seek it," Ghassan said.

Ghassan assured that the Defence Forces would remain steadfast in providing the security it is mandated to as per the laws.

Before he had assumed his role as a Minister in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet, Ghassan, too, had served as an MP in the Parliament's Committee on National Security (241 Committee).

The 241 Committee has previously conducted an inquiry into the attack.

MP Imthiyaz submits request

After Ghassan made his statement, MP Imthiyaz Fahmy formally submitted a request seeking the said new information.

He submitted a letter to Speaker Mohamed Aslam on Monday, right after the Minister concluded his remarks. In the letter, Imthiyaz appealed to the Speaker to obtain said new information and in light of the new information received, to task appropriate committees into further looking into the matter.

Eight individuals have been charged in relation to the attack on Nasheed. Adhuham Ahmed, found guilty of active participation in the detonation of the bomb, has been sentenced to 23 years. Trials of the remaining seven accused are still ongoing.
