Local business magnate and long term parliamentarian Qasim Ibrahim today blamed past governments for Maldives' declined economic status.

Qasim, in a press conference at the parliament on Thursday afternoon, told reporters today that the current administration is taking great strides in improving the country's economic situation.

"It was not during Maumoon's administration - it is very clear. I am not giving Maumoon a point. It is the result of the administrations that came to power in 2008, 2013 and 2018," Qasim, who served as a minister during former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom's administration said.

He said that it was the result of the debt accrued and bonds sold throughout these administrations.

In the string of praise of the incumbent government, Qasim said said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu "removed managing directors of companies and other ministers in efforts to steer matters towards the right path."

He also shared Dr. Muizzu's idea of combining the presidential and parliamentary elections, saying that those who come onto power as president have often abused their power to make various pledges ahead of presidential elections to claim victory during the parliamentary elections.

However, Qasim Ibrahim's Jumhooree Party was in the coalition of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, had an alliance which led to the victory of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom's presidential elections, and even joined forces with former President Mohamed Nasheed in his bid to become president.
