Voting commences in the northern atolls of Maldives.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih arrives in Jamaaludheen School to vote for Parliamentary Elections 2019.

Speaking to the press after voting, President Solih urged people to take part in the voting.

He expressed joy at seeing independent voting underway.

In Haa Alif Atoll, 333 people have cast their votes in Hoarafushi, 93 voters in Uligan, and 230 in Thuraakunu.

Local media reports that around 70 percent of those eligible in the area have voted so far.

With 358 voters, more than half of the 640 people registered at the polling station in Billabong for Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, have cast their votes.

Queues at the voting centres are quite long, according to local media.

Over 510 voters cast their ballots at the polling station allocated for the constituency of Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll, in Male'.

From those registered to vote in Male', 456 out of 559 eligible people voted for the constituencies of Baarah and Muraidhoo, Haa Alif Atoll.

Meanwhile, 423 out of 476 registered voters have cast their ballots for the constituencies of Utheemu and Thakandhoo in the same atoll.

Over 90 percent of the people registered to vote in Male's polling station for Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, have cast their vote.

According to local media, only 61 of the 645 eligible voters have not voted yet.
