In a press conference held this afternoon at the President's Office with Zameer and Attorney General Ahmed Usham speaking, the Minister revealed that there is over MVR 2 billion which was spent from the State budget last year but not entered into Finance Ministry's records.
This had resulted in bills of total MVR 2.5 billion requested for posting in the previous two years had to be given space within this year's budget. The Minister added that such bills may also be at various other ministries, with efforts now ongoing to investigate this with the assistance of the Auditor General's Office.
One this matter is resolved, Zameer said that a request for a supplementary budget will need to be submitted, work on compiling which is ongoing now.
"The actual amount will be decided after seeking advice from the cabinet and elsewhere, including from President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. We will finalize this after getting the Auditor General's report. But we will submit a request," Zameer said.
This year the parliament has approved a State Budget of MVR 49.8 billion.
Previously, the Finance Ministry has said in the Public Accounts Committee at parliament that if the expenses followed the trajectory at the time, then this year's budget would be close to MVR 58 billion.
Asked about this by a reported, Zameer responded that with the fiscal reform measures being taken by the government now, it will not be necessary to supplement the budget to that figure. He estimates that the request for supplementary budget will be at about MVR 5 billion, but reiterated that the final amount will only be set following further discussion.
