President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Floating Solar Panel installation, the first project conducted under the Special Economic Zone Act, is slated for completion in 2027.

Delivering the Presidential Address in the parliament's first sitting of the year today, President Muizzu said that a decision has been made to issue an SEZ permit to a foreign entity to conduct a floating solar project in a lagoon in Male' atoll, which will result in establishing a national grid producing 100 megawatts of electricity through solar power.

The President announced that work on the project will commence within the year and be completed in 2027.

Ministry of Economic Development and Trade issued a permit for the first phase of the project to Canada's Abraxas Power Corporation in April last year. The technical partner for the project is Sungrow Power Supply Co.

The government has previously said that the cost of the project will be approximately MVR 1.6 billion.

The government aims to generate 33 percent of energy where renewable energy sources by the end of 2028.

The President said that the government is also working on increasing public participation in adapting renewable energy, citing the 'Magey Solar' programme initiated last year as indicating that this target can be reached.

He went on to announce the 'Magey Saafu Raajje' program, under which modern waste management facilities will be introduced in all inhabited islands has also been commenced. Under this, waste management facilities were set up in 17 islands last year.

Environment and renewable energy

- Projects to be commenced in 57 islands facing the most severe erosion to find permanent solutions

- Provision of water supply services to 56 islands without the service, and establishing sewerage facilities in 45 islands within the next two years. With this, water and sewerage services will be available in all inhabited islands by the end of 2026
