A second parliamentary sitting has been scheduled for today, to follow the first one in which President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will be issuing his first Parliamentary Address.

This second sitting is scheduled to be held in the afternoon. The main point on agenda is the preliminary debate on the bill of amendment to the General Elections Act, submitted by Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau.

In the amendment proposed by Shifau, some points have been added to Article 43 of the Act. It states that no elections must be held in the month of Ramadan, requiring a delaying of the voting to a date within ten days after the fasting month.

The Act outlines how specific elections must be held, and durations in which different actions must be undertaken. However, the statement reads that even if circumstances arise where abiding by the detailed timeline is deemed impossible, changes must be implemented to ensure that the day of the election does not fall into Ramadan, and then a new timeline should be decided upon and announced.

Elections Commission has announced that the parliament election will be held on March 17.

Additionally, the sitting will also confer on the motion - submitted by Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla - regarding reappointment of cabinet members who were refused parliamentary approval.
