Aarah to be utilised as quarantine facility for coronavirus

Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed stated on Sunday that an isolation facility will be set up at the presidential island Aarah, Kaafu Atoll, to quarantine individuals suspected for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President's Office, minister Ali Waheed stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih suggested Aarah be utilised as a quarantine facility.

According to the minister, individuals suspected for the disease can be quarantined at the island, starting immediately.

Following the new coronavirus outbreak originating from Wuhan City, China, authorities have set up quarantine facilities in Funadhoo, Kaafu Atoll, and Farukolhufushi in phase two of reclaimed suburb Hulhumale' as well.

Ministry of Health has confirmed one suspected case of the virus in Maldives. The suspected 20-year-old Maldivian male, who recently travelled to China, is now quarantined at the isolation facility in Funadhoo.

Authorities confirmed that samples from the suspected case have been sent abroad to Pune, India, for testing. However, they are yet to receive the results.

The new strain of coronavirus originating in Wuhan City has now been detected in a total of 27 countries.

As of Sunday noon, a total of 14,559 cases of the virus were reported worldwide, with a death toll of 305.

Chinese authorities revealed that 328 patients that contracted that disease have made full recoveries.
