A petition has been submitted in Parliament to address the issue of tourism employees being prohibited from growing facial hair.
The motion was submitted by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, who has been an advocate for the rights of tourism workers.
MP Mauroof highlighted that the dress code of some resorts restricts employees from growing facial hair or wearing a hijab, which, according to the resolution, infringes upon the rights of citizens who wish to work in the tourism industry while maintaining these personal choices.

During the debate, MP Mauroof said that 45 percent of resorts in the Maldives currently allow employees to have beards, moustaches, and wear hijabs.
He cited a survey by the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), involving 11,000 people, in which 93 percent of employees expressed a desire to maintain a beard within acceptable standards.
