A 75-bed expansion project at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) will be operational from May, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.

Speaking during the second episode of Rayyithunnaa Eku [With Citizens], a podcast hosted by the President’s Office, he highlighted the administration’s efforts to improve healthcare facilities in Maldives.

President Muizzu said that when his government took office, the conditions at IGMH were poor. Since then, significant work has been done to enhance the hospital’s services, including the implementation of this new project.

He stated that the additional beds would help alleviate space constraints and improve patient care.

The newly added beds include 44 in the general ward, 15 high-dependency beds, and 14 private units.

According to the President, this expansion will bring much-needed relief to the hospital overcrowding.

President Muizzu also highlighted improvements in the hospital's pediatric care. A dedicated pediatric emergency room, which began operations in November last year, has already treated over 10,393 children in just four months.

He said that without this facility, all these children would have had to seek treatment in the general ER. The new pediatric ER is designed to be child-friendly and staffed with specialist pediatricians to ensure specialized care.

Additionally, he said that both Dharumavantha Hospital and Hulhumale' Hospital have been upgraded to tertiary-level facilities with expanded services.

President Muizzu also revealed plans to build a 100-bed tertiary hospital in Vilimale' with assistance from the Chinese government. He assured that the project has adequate financial support and will be completed as planned.
