Only 7 percent use public transport between Male' and Hulhumale': study

The study, commissioned by Male' City Council before establishing vehicle limits in Male', found that the most used public transport in the Male' region is the ferry service between Male' and Vilimale'.

The study, commissioned by Male' City Council before establishing vehicle limits in Male', found that the most used public transport in the Male' region is the ferry service between Male' and Vilimale'.

On average, 6,540 people travel daily on the ferry between Male' and Vilimale'. This represents 96.8 percent of the people traveling between Male' and Vilimale' each day.

The second most used public transport is the RTL bus service between Male' and Hulhumale'. On average, 15,141 people travel daily by RTL bus between Male' and Hulhumale'. This accounts for only 7.4 percent of the people traveling between these two locations each day. However, in terms of percentage, the second most used public transport is the Vilimale' RTL bus service. In Vilimale', an average of 939 people travel by bus daily, representing 13.9 percent of travelers.

In the congested Male', an average of only 2,014 people use the RTL bus service daily. This represents just 1.47 percent of people.

According to the study, to reduce the number of vehicles, the quality of public transport services must be improved and routes should be increased. The study emphasized that expanding public transport services before establishing a vehicle limit is very important.

After considering the number of roads in the Male' region, road width, available parking spaces, and other factors, the study recommends setting a vehicle limit for the region at 89,413.
