Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has started work on relocating the Thalassemia Center to the Orange Hiya building in Hulhumale'.
The project was handed over to MNDF following protests by Thalassemia patients and their families last Saturday over inadequate services at the existing center.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, after inspecting the facility, assigned MNDF to expedite the completion of the new center.
In a post on X, MNDF said that work began today as per the President’s directive. The project is being carried out under the supervision of the MNDF Service Corps.
Electrical and air conditioning work will be undertaken by MNDF's electrical and mechanical engineers, while all IT-related tasks will be managed by MNDF Signals technical personnel.
Their engineering team has also introduced design modifications to make the new facility more child-friendly.
MNDF has set April 25 as the target date for completion.
The new Thalassemia Center is being set up on a floor of the Orange Hiya building, which was previously used as a Covid-19 facility in Hulhumale'.
The contract with the previous company responsible for the project was not renewed after its expiration.
