Maldives has begun preparations to introduce digital currency to the country.
Speaking at Maldives National University (MNU)'s graduation ceremony today, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that he announced his plans to have the digital economy account for 15 percent of the country's GDP by the year 2030, at the UN Annual General Assembly.
To achieve that goal, the President has asked Governor Ahmed Munawwar to pass laws and introduce crypto currency.
"I have now informed the MMA Governor to start working on introducing digital currency, crypto currency to the Maldives. The MMA Governor has now begun efforts towards this work," the President said.
He detailed that the plan is to create laws to bring digital currency to the country, and expand it to fit international best standards.
He also said that this would create opportunities for graduates and creatives to participate in the economy.
President Muizzu said within digitalisation, Maldives will be a global leader in artificial intelligence.
MMA's Governor Ahmed Munawwar also said earlier that he has launched special efforts to create his own digital currency. He said that the main purpose of MMA creating a digital currency is to make it a stable, safe currency.
