An emergency motion submitted to the Parliament alleging that the government is attempting to put a deadlock on Supreme Court and influencing the judiciary has been dismissed.

According to the emergency motion, the government has tried in several ways to influence the Supreme Court when it ordered that the court had the jurisdiction to hear a petition seeking to quash the constitutional amendment that mandates MPs lose their seats in case of defection or expulsion from their party.
Parliament passed a bill to reduce the number of judges on the Supreme Court bench from seven to five during this matter as well, the motion read.
The emergency motion also described the sudden suspension of three Supreme Court judges on Thursday as an obstruction of the proceedings.
Shamsheed's emergency motion said there was no way to hear the case with the suspension of the judges and the Supreme Court was being put in a deadlock.
The emergency motion condemned these actions and called for an end to all attempts to use state institutions to exert influence.
Ruling People's National Congress (PNC)'s supermajority parliament rejected the bill with 46 votes. Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s 11 members voted to accept the bill in parliament for debate.
Ruling party member, Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan, who voted against the party’s three line whip to pass the bill to reduce the number of judges on the Supreme Court bench, he did not vote for a particular side.
