Normalization Committee of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has said that FIFA President Gianni Infantino has assured that they would help Maldives' football recover from the current critical condition it is in.
Normalization Committee Chair Ahmed Zuhoor and FAM Acting General Secretary Mohamed Jaushan Shareef attended the Asia Football Presidents and General Secretaries Conference held in South Korea.
Zuhoor said that they had met with Infantino and AFC President Sheikh Salman Bin Ibrahim Ali Khalifa on the sidelines of the event and shared an update on the situation of FAM.
According to Zuhoor, Infantino said that FIFA would provide assistance for two issues beyond the regular budget they provide to FAM.
As such, they agreed, on FAM's request, to disburse funds to assist in covering salaries until FAM's issues are resolved.
"Both of them [Infantino and Salman] gave commitments that they would assist in developing football. Especially to develop young football players and for football infrastructure. This includes the Hulhumale' Football School project," Zuhoor said.
FAM was earlier given a plot of land in Hulhumale' to develop a football training centre as a boarding school. However, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) later withdrew the land due to non-payment of rent.
Zuhoor has earlier said that discussions are being held with the government to explore ways of having that land allocated back for the purpose.
Zuhoor also met with football institution leaders from South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Japan, who also stated that they would extend possible assistance once told of FAM's troubles.
"I believe it went very positively," Zuhoor said.
