Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Dhigurah MP Ahmed Nazim has suggested that those involved in crimes against Palestine should be specifically banned from entering the Maldives as part of punitive actions against Israel's genocide against Palestine.

Speaking during a meeting of the Parliament's Committee on National Security Services (241) regarding the proposed amendment to the Immigration Act to ban Israeli passport holders, Nazim shared his perspective on targeting restrictions.

He highlighted that while the Cabinet had decided to implement a complete ban on Israeli passport holders, it is important to consider broader implications.

Nazim said that many Israeli passport holders reside in countries like South America, United States, and Argentina, with some preferring to use Israeli passports for easier travel, especially to the US.

Nazim added that some Arab countries, Jordan, and even Palestinians use Israeli passports.

It is crucial to gather statistics on Israeli passport holders visiting the Maldives, including their purpose for travel, Nazim said.

This data could help decide on the approach to banning specific individuals, such as those directly aiding in or participating in military activities or human rights abuses.

“The UN also takes action against individuals involved in military or human rights violations, and Maldives could adopt a similar targeted approach,” he said.

Nazim highlighted the need for detailed information to identify those who should be banned.

Nazim also stated that while the government has decided to impose a blanket ban, the parliament has the authority to study the matter and propose recommendations

“If the target is those aiding in the genocide, it can be done that way,” he suggested.

The committee has decided to meet with political parties, government agencies, and tourism associations to gather input and statistics before finalizing their recommendations on the issue.
