Maldives Ports Limited CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim has assured that no actions leading to corruption has been committed within the company. He added that he had personally appealed to the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate the allegations against him.

Recently, allegations have arisen that Wajeeh wrongfully used the company's official credit card on a trip abroad, and that there is corruption involved in the purchasing of vehicles and other equipment needed by the company.

Wajeeh spoke to Mihaaru News about the allegations, stating that for years, MPL has a code of conduct for CEOs and other management positions passed by its board. He noted that amongst this is a guideline on use of credit card on trips abroad.

"I came to this post just recently. There is a policy even about the credit card issue. It's stated that if any personal expenses are made on the carrd, then the amount has to be paid back on the first payroll [salary] then received after return. This has been done for a long time. It wasn't decided yesterday or today," he said.

However, after allegations of misuse of the credit card arose, Wajeeh contacted the ACC and requested that an investigation be initiated into the matter. Wajeeh said that the ACC is currently conducting said investigation.

"I am confident there will be no issues. I have that certainty. It is because I am confident of this that I took the initiative and went to the ACC. I have not done anything wrongfully," he asserted.

Wajeeh said that earlier, the credit card had been changed under the names of former CEOs and then used. However, there is no card under his name so far, he assured.

"But because this slander has come against me, I requested ACC to look into it. What I am saying is, it is something allowed under the company's policies. Former CEOs have also used [the company credit card]. After using it for personal use, we have to repay the amount once we return," he explained.

He further assured that he has no involvement in procurement by MPL.

"There will be no wrongs done with my involvement. Nothing that will lead to corruption has been done," he stated.

Wajeeh said that he had promptly instructed an internal audit after allegations of corruption in procurement arose on social media. He said that the ACC, too, had said that they will look into the procurement issues once the credit card investigation is completed.

The CEO said that since assuming office, he had instructed for the best quality products to be found at the best rates available in the market. However, he is not personally involved in procurement, he said.

He has instructed that the procurement, too, be done in a manner that does not contravene company policies and standards of procedure. He maintains that these are documented policies and no actions will be taken against them.

"I am assuring you that there will be no wrongs done here with my involvement. No one can say the CEO did wrong here. No corruption has been committed here under my managing director post," Wajeeh said.ci
