Two kilograms of drugs which a Pakistani individual travelling to Male' via Doha tried to bring in has been seized, with two Maldivians believed to be involved also arrested.
In a joint press conference held by Police and Customs at Iskandhar Koshi today, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Waheed revealed that this Pakistani individual had arrived in the Maldives on last Wednesday.
Tests conducted have shown that the 2.12 kg of drugs which he was in possession of is heroin. The street price of this is above MVR 2 million, Police said.
Waheed stated that two Maldivians have also been arrested in relation to this case. These are two men aged 25 and 42.
Court has issued an order for the three to be held in remand in custody for a period of 15 days while the investigation continues.
Waheed said that police suspect the involvement of additional individuals as well in this case, and are conducting the necessary investigations to ascertain this.
No further details regarding the case were revealed as the investigation is ongoing.
Waheed said that efforts are ongoing to amend the laws to bring an end to Maldivians staying abroad and sending in drugs to the country, and financing this, adding that they are working in collaboration with Interpol and other agencies.
Drug Enforcement Department Head Nahid Hussain said that in the first six months of this year, over 10 kg of drugs have been seized monthly. Through various operations, a total of 62 kg of drugs have been seized so far this year. Nahid said.
"Considering drugs, alcohol, different types of party drugs and other narcotics, we have seized drugs worth over MVR 143 million this year," Nahid revealed.
Additionally, he said that 116 expatriates have been deported in the first half of this year in relation to drug-related offences.
