President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the fifth amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act yesterday.

The amendment, passed during the parliament sitting on December 9, seeks to enhance the existing bail system outlined in the current Act by instituting new guidelines and procedures while also amending the established protocols governing bail during investigation or trial periods.

The amendment outlines specific circumstances under which individuals may request bail following a conviction and provides a clear framework for appealing such decisions.

The amendment also includes mechanisms to combat cybercrimes committed via advanced technologies. Law enforcement agencies will now have the authority to intercept personal information and access subscriber and communication data through court orders.

The legislation also mandates the creation of a real-time data access system, to be established in coordination with financial and law enforcement authorities.

To further safeguard public interests, the amendment empowers authorities to freeze assets and suspend financial transactions linked to scams. This measure aims to prevent the misuse of funds and protect individuals from financial exploitation.

The amendment has been published in the Gazette and will take effect accordingly.
