In the inaugural shield match of the Maldives' biggest futsal tournament, Golden Futsal Challenge, Laamu Gan has defeated Eydhafushi 1-0 and defended the shield.
In the match played last night at the Rehendhi Futsal grounds, Gan's sole goal was shot by Abdulla Junaid (Jenney).
Gan's team played without Hussain Shareef (Only) and Ali Shaamis (Thoppe') in last night's match due to injuries. Eydhafushi team also did not include players that played a key role last year, such as Ali Fasir (Sentey), Hamza Mohamed (Hampu) and Haisham Hassan (Bidi) as they were not released by their first division team, Maziya.
Gan won the shield last year through defeating Thaa atoll Thimarafushi with a score of 3-2. However, they lose in the Golden Futsal Challenge finals to Eydhafushi by 2-4.
The shield match was introduced in 2023, where champions of the previous two years face off against each other.
Gan team has announced that the prize money of MVR 25,000 that they received from last night's match will be donated as charity to the people of Gaza.
This year's Golden Futsal Challenge will see 129 islands competing. The tournament will start tonight with matches between Haa Alif atoll and Haa Dhaalu atoll.
