Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has voiced concerns that some members on their party register are being switched to other parties without their knowledge.

In a press statement issued yesterday, MDP said that they are receiving a high number of complaints that members are becoming victim to falsified party switching, most commonly to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

They stated that some general members and national council members of MDP have been included in the PNC members' registry despite not having filled out membership forms for the party.

Some members have also been switched to a number of other parties, they said, and appealed to the Elections Commission to look into the matter.

MDP alleges that the party's members are being switched to other parties through submitting forms with forged signatures to the Elections Commission.

The party called on Elections Commission to further strengthen the procedures for recruitment of new members and to set in place safeguards which will 'prevent PNC from adding members through falsified forms'.

MDP accused the ruling party of using people's personal data in possession of the government to create falsified membership forms and called on Elections Commission to look into this and take strict action against such actions.

They called on relevant authorities to conduct investigations into PNC increasing membership through forging signatures.

MDP member since 2005, and former Heritage State Minister during MDP's administration, Mohamed Thoriq has also submitted a case to Police claiming he was wrongfully included as a PNC member. A letter he sent to Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau alleging his signature had been forged on the membership form is also making rounds on social media.
