Parliament has voted against dismissing Dr Mohamed Zahir, who, along with two other members of the Elections Commission, was accused of misuse of the election database during last year's presidential election and profiting from its sale.

At the committee stage, dismissal of Zahir, EC Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif was passed.

However, voting in the parliament floor saw only Nashath and Asif being dismissed.

In the case of Nashath, 69 members voted in favour of his dismissal. For Asif, 68 members voted in favour of dismissal. Ten MPs from opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) voted against the dismissal of both.

When the vote was taken for Zahir's dismissal, 70 votes were received against his dismissal.

The report presented to parliament by the committee today outlined 19 charges against the three members. While there are many allegations against all three, it remains unclear why the ruling party majority parliament decided to not dismiss Zahir.
