State Trading Organization has stated that the staple food shipment being imported from Turkey will be brought into the country very soon.

“The boat has departed [Turkey] with the staple food shipment,” Yusuf Shaah, the Corporate Branding Officer of the one of the largest state companies, STO, shared with Mihaaru.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that an agreement has been signed with Turkey to import necessary staple food items into the country.

“An agreement has been signed to import rice, sugar, flour and various other goods with a 10 percent increase to basic requirements of a year. The first shipment of flour has now been ordered. It will arrive in the month of February,” said the President in a media statement following his return from his presidential trip to China at the request of China’s President, Xi Jinping.

Additionally, the President had further assured that goods such as onions, potatoes and eggs have been arranged to be imported from other countries as well.

Spokesperson for STO, Shaah added that the company has been deliberating business opportunities with Turkey as well.

“STO has formed several business agreements with other countries and is engaging in communications. We are a business company. Therefore, we will always have that link with other countries,” Shah highlighted.

Maldives and Turkey have held close relations after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was sworn into office, as evident with his trip to Turkey for his first official presidential overseas visit. Maldives has also established an embassy in Turkey for the first time.
