Addu City received a new 1.8 megawatt generator to resolved the ongoing power crisis in the city.

The generator was installed and put to use this week.

Addu's long standing electricity issue was exacerbated several months ago. Recently it was revealed that four generators were damaged of which one was beyond repair.

With frequent power cuts as a result, FENAKA - the state owned enterprise which supplies electricity to the city - made an agreement with STELCO to deliver the 1.8 megawatt generator to the city.

FENAKA also said that while one of the damaged generators has also been repaired, the second generator would be repaired by this week's end and the third one to be fixed up and put to use with spare part imported from overseas in a week's time.

The company also said they were prioritising the matter as the upcoming month of Ramadan is typically a high power consumption period.

Addu City is the second most populous city in the country, and its connected islands require 12 megawatts of power during peak hours. There are 20 generator sets in the city power supply, which have a combined capacity of 26.8 megawatts. However, with five generators out of order, power cuts became a regular occurrence in the city.
