Addressing the 149th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) currently ongoing in Geneva, Switzerland, Speaker Abdul Raheem spoke of how parliaments must balance innovation with regulation.
He spoke of the dangers misinformation and disinformation pose to a democratic society, and highlighted the importance of ensuring to stay alert to AI developments and to shape the use of AI in ways that will benefit society.
He stated that it is key to develop solid ethical frameworks for science, technology and innovation in alignment with IPU's Charter on the Ethics of Science and Technology so as to ensure it is adapted with integrity and respect for human rights.
The Speaker went on to share how Maldives is adapting science, technology and innovation in driving development and tackling challenges.
He recalled President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge at COP28 to commit to providing 33 percent of the country's electricity through renewable energy within the next five years, and the campaign to plant five million trees.
He shared that the Maldives' Parliament is the first parliament to fully transition online during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Abdul Raheem also said that Maldives is working to use AI technology in areas such as healthcare, education, erosion detection, environmental monitoring and social welfare.
Before concluding his speech, the Speaker also called on the international community to act to stop the genocide in Palestine, warning that such conflicts have far-reaching consequences.
