The government has announced today its decision to include 'Nationalism' as a separate subject in school curriculums starting from this upcoming new academic year.

Speaking to the press after today's cabinet meeting Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim stated that the cabinet had reached this decision today.

Nazim said that the decision had been made so as to foster respect for the tenets and values of nationalism among the younger generation.

"We aim to create a generation that is familiar with the factors of nationalism and fosters a love for it. To revive Maldivian nationalism. This is why the Social Council has decided to teach nationalism as a separate subject in the national curriculum," Nazim said.

Nazim confirmed that the government is ready to undertake all necessary preparations to include this in the national curriculum by the start of the academic year at government schools.

He added that the Education Ministry has been instructed to commence work in this regard, stating that the ministry will be working under the advice of the President's Office.

Teaching Nationalism as a separate subject is one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledges made during the presidential campaign.

The President said at the time that through introducing this subject, the government would teach children discipline.

According to the changes that this government has decided to bring to the dates of the academic year, the ongoing academic year will be concluded in April. The new academic year is scheduled to commence on May 26.
