Ban on the sale of plastic water bottles 1 litre and under in Maldives has been postponed till 2024.
As per the previous administration's policy, the ban on the import and production of this category of products of single use plastics would have come into effect today. In March 2024, the ban would have been extended to the sale of such bottles as well.
However, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the ban has been postponed in full until next year.
As per his resolution, the import and production of water bottles of 1 litre and less will be banned from the end of August, 2024. The sale of such products is to be banned from the end of November, 2024.
A list of single use plastics that are banned from being imported, produced or sold in the Maldives was compiled by the previous administration. Then government when it ended its term was in the process of implementing the bans under a long term schedule.
