The government has decided to establish a new building in Hulhumale’ to expand the ‘Vaqf Fund’ operations to facilitate development and maintenance of mosques in Male’ region and atolls.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed via X confirmed that laying the foundation for the new building in Hulhumale’ is expected to be conducted in January 2024.
The first ‘Vaqf’ building named ‘Dhaar-ul-Iman’ was established six years back. Besides the Vaqf office, the nine-storey building’s floors have been rented out other government offices as well.
The building was developed on the advice of Dr. Shaheem in his previous tenure as the Minister of Islamic Affairs during former President Abdulla Yameen’s presidency. From the rented floors of the building, ‘Vaqf Fund’ generates MVR 6 million per annum.
During his presidential campaign earlier this year, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had pledged to develop Vaqf buildings across the atolls.
