Under the amended regulations, people can join political parties only by filling out forms available on the Elections Commission's "My Portal." Once a form is accepted, the party will be notified.
Before adding a person to a party register, the Elections Commission must verify if any complaints have been raised. The amendment also requires parties to maintain online forms for 10 years.
This change follows a rise in fraudulent party enrollments. Over the past six months, 300 cases of individuals unknowingly being registered into political parties have been reported.
The issue resurfaced after the ruling People's National Congress saw its membership surge from 3,000 to 60,000 during its recruitment efforts. The existing registration portal has been temporarily suspended as the system undergoes security upgrades.
