Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim said that sustainable financial assistance is needed to achieve the goals set by the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Speaking at the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Colombia from October 29 to 31, Minister Thoriq stated that the Maldives’ National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan is undergoing review and updates.
The Minister highlighted efforts to implement the 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, noting that the action plan will include initiatives to help the Maldives meet international targets aligned with the framework.
Addressing the high-level segment, he stressed the importance of sustainable financial support for countries implementing the Convention’s goals, highlighting the unique challenges faced by small island developing nations in conserving biodiversity. He called for international collaboration to provide targeted assistance to countries like the Maldives.
During his remarks, he also highlighted ongoing projects aimed at enhancing environmental protection and biodiversity, including the establishment of three additional biosphere reserves and a nature park in each atoll. Additionally, a nature fund has been set up to support these efforts, and a nationwide Five Million Trees Project has been launched.
