Number of vehicles allowed in Malé City roads to be determined in six months: Mayor Azim

Malé City Mayor, Adam Azim said that the number of vehicles allowed in the City of Malé will be determined in the next six months.

The change, brought under the Land Transport Act, to extend the power to alter the vehicle registration policies, determine the number of vehicles allowed and enforce a time frame for vehicle use to Local Councils was made in the year 2021.

During his first press conference after assuming office, Azim said that negotiations are ongoing with the Ministries regarding the conclusive number of vehicles to be allowed in the city.

“Number of vehicles allowed needs to be determined. By God’s will, we will determine the numbers in the next six months. Congesting the roads of Male’ with vehicles will not benefit anyone. Swift solutions need to found for this.” Azim said.

He said that developing Male’ City into a relaxed environment and improving the conditions of the city roads is one of his biggest goals. As stated by him, the parking situation in the city requires a swift and permanent solution. He assured that he will work closely with the Housing Ministry to resolve this issue.

He also added that negotiation will ensue with the Housing Ministry regarding the establishment of parking buildings as well.

In the Manifesto issued to the public during his elections, Azim had included his intention to solve the vehicle situation in Male’ and vowed to transform Male’ into a relaxed and serene city.

Azim affirmed his intention to work in collaboration with the government to accomplish these pledges.
